Dennis finds the fun again
Before connecting with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and Feros Care, Dennis felt stuck. Life had somewhat lost its spark, and his days were often spent in his lounge chair, drifting between TV shows and naps.
Eight years ago, Dennis was diagnosed with Myotonic dystrophy, an inherited multisystem condition that causes progressive muscle loss, weakness and myotonia which is where muscles can’t relax after contraction. He has since had three strokes, one heart attack and has chronic atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia and diabetes. Because Dennis uses a wheelchair and requires a hoist to be transferred, his movement is restricted, and he fell into a pattern of not doing much. This led to feelings of isolation and despondency, making it difficult for him to find motivation or joy in daily activities.
“I was doing nothing so I had nothing to talk about,” Dennis shared, reflecting on those quieter times.
For his wife Pam, who lovingly provided all his personal care despite her own back injury, life wasn’t easy either. Supporting Dennis while managing her own health challenges made things stressful and exhausting. But with a little support from the NDIS and Team Feros, everything began to change – and fun was back on the agenda!
A little support and a fresh start
The transformation began with two simple steps.
Step One – Finding the right personal care support for Dennis.
This gave Pam the chance to take a breather, focus on her own wellbeing, and spend some time doing things to fill her cup.
Step Two – Engaging social supports to help Dennis reconnect with the world beyond his front door.
What followed was nothing short of a turning point. With gentle encouragement and tailored support, Dennis began to explore new activities, meet new people, and discover reasons to smile again.
From quiet days to bold ways
Now, Dennis’s days are anything but quiet. You’ll find him chatting with his support worker, venturing out into the community, or trying something new, Dennis has rediscovered a sense of purpose, and he’s loving it!
“We had nothing to talk about before,” he shared. “But now, Pam and I talk all the time!”
“I can tell her what my support worker and I got up to and what I’ve seen, and she can tell me about her day too”.
This rediscovered sense of connection has done wonders for Dennis and his relationship with his wife. For Pam, seeing Dennis thrive again means she can take time out to enjoy her interests and reconnect with her friends knowing he’s well-supported – and enjoying life!
“It’s been incredible. His speech has improved from communicating with other people again, his muscles are more relaxed and he’s so much happier in himself,” Pam tells.
Finding fun, rediscovering joy
Through the NDIS and Feros Care, Dennis has been empowered to live boldly and joyfully, and his wife Pam has regained balance in her life too.
“We’re extremely thankful,” they share, reflecting on how far they’ve come. Today, their lives are buzzing with meaningful conversations, shared laughter, and fun moments to treasure.
