New year, new hobbies: 5 exciting things to try in 2025

A new year means a fresh start, with endless possibilities to revisit cherished hobbies or explore brand-new passions!

We’ve compiled a list of five ways to help expand your horizons this year, both out and about in the community and from the comfort of your own home.

1. Make new friends!

Want to meet like-minded people, enjoy a great day out, and explore your local community? Find your fun and turn an ordinary day into an extraordinary one, with Feros Care Social Groups!

We make it easy for people of all ages to experience a day of fun, discovery, and connection, accompanied by a qualified Community Support Worker. Whether you’d like to expand your social circle, learn a new skill, or just break up the day-to-day, there’s a variety of options for different tastes and accessibility needs.

Think cultural events, local attractions, meals at beautiful locations, shopping trips, community events, and fun activities to name a few. There is so much to discover and we’re here to help you explore it all.

2. Nurture your physical and mental wellness

Would you like to move more confidently around your home, enhance your fitness, get to know like-minded people, and add some fun to your life? Or maybe you’re just itching to break out of your usual routine and try something new? Our eight-week Allied Health Groups (plus a pre-and-post-assessment), could be the answer!

Designed to help you explore and participate in the physical activities you enjoy, we offer three exercise and movement-focused programs – with a healthy dose of friendship thrown in for good measure.

Facilitated by aged care physiotherapists and exercise physiologists who truly understand your needs, these groups can improve mobility, strength, balance, mental health, and overall wellbeing to help you live your best, bold life.

Full of fun and smiles, you can even choose to sign up privately if you’re not a Feros Care Home Care Package (HCP) or Commonwealth Home Support Services (CHSP) client.

3. Listen to a podcast

A podcast is the perfect way to learn something new or discover an interesting story – and you don’t even have to leave your home! With such a huge range of topics on offer, you can pick and choose what to listen to based on what interests you the most.

Listen while you’re cooking, tidying the house, driving, or take a device on the go and tune in while you’re walking or just sitting and enjoying the scenery at your favourite park.

If you’re not sure where to begin, our new season of the Feros Talks podcast, ‘Unsaid, Untold’, is a space for raw, real stories that are often left out of conversations. With topics like ‘Who cares for the carers?’ and ‘why don’t Australians want to live with their elderly parents?’, some are uncomfortable, some controversial, but all are passionate, insightful, and help open up authentic conversations that will shift perceptions.

Use a phone or tablet to download apps such as Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts and Stitcher to listen to the podcast, or find it online and stream it directly here.

4. Expand your technology skills

Would you like to improve your digital confidence to keep up with the kids…and grandkids? Then check out our Let’s Get Technical Service.

It offers personalised, interactive, and easy to follow sessions with our Care Support Workers to assist with using technology, focusing on your unique digital literacy goals. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to expand your skills, these tailored sessions ensure you get the most out of your tech devices.

The best part? We’re very patient, and no question is too much! It’s all about you and your individual goals and our team work exclusively with seniors, so they know how to teach you in a way you’ll understand.

5. Discover a different kind of film

If you’ve always loved the cinema, it could be the perfect time to step it up a notch and take a foray into the world of short films.

‘Stigma Doesn’t Live Here: Stories of Mental Health Resilience’ is a new, powerful five-part docuseries that shines a light on the lived experiences of Australians with mental illness. Told through their own words, these short films explore the strength, resilience, and value these individuals bring to their communities.

In an effort to challenge stigma and promote greater understanding, each story offers a deeply personal perspective on navigating mental health challenges.

Get comfortable, dim the lights, and take a deep dive into these remarkable stories – and make sure you let us know which one you think is most powerful!

We hope this list has inspired you to explore new possibilities and dive into the year with enthusiasm. Whether it’s connecting with others, improving your overall wellbeing, or simply discovering (or rediscovering!) something that you love, there’s something here for everyone.

Here’s to a year full of fun, fulfillment, and fantastic experiences!
