In-Home Care: Everything You Need to Know

What is in-home care?

In-home care is an invaluable service that allows older Australians to receive the support they need to continue living comfortably in their own home.

This type of aged care provides a range of services tailored to individual needs, to help seniors maintain their independence, health, happiness, and quality of life.

Whether it’s daily living assistance, medical care, social interaction, or specialised support for more complex care needs, Feros Care has in-home care services that ensures seniors receive services tailored to their unique health and wellbeing goals.

Funding from the Australian government

The Australian government plays a pivotal role in supporting aged care services, such as in-home care. It provides funding for Home Care Packages (HCP) and the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) to help eligible seniors access the in-home services they need to live independently in their own homes.

For more information, head to the Department of Health and Aged Care (the government’s aged care website).

What is the difference between a Home Care Package and the Commonwealth Home Support Program?

Home Care Packages are assigned to seniors who require higher-level support, whereas The Commonwealth Home Support Program is available to those with lower-level care needs. You can read more about The Commonwealth Home Support Program here.

Home Care Package budget and services

A Home Care Package budget is allocated by the government organisation My Aged Care based on the level of care required. There are four different levels of Home Care Packages, determined by the complexity of your needs.

This budget can cover various services, such as personal care, domestic assistance, and nursing care, all aimed at helping you stay in your own home.

As an aged care provider, Feros Care will work closely with you to develop a care plan that aligns with your budget, ensuring that you receive the services you need to live a happy, healthy, and better-connected life.

The assessment process

To determine eligibility for a Home Care Package, an assessment is conducted by My Aged Care. This involves a comprehensive evaluation of your care needs, living situation, and overall health. The assessment ensures that the right level of support is provided, tailored to your specific requirements. It is a critical step in accessing the appropriate level of care and setting you up to achieve your health and wellbeing goals.

Types of services available

In-home care encompasses a wide range of services (Australia) designed to support seniors in various aspects of their daily lives.

We have listed the most commonly used below, however there are extra services available depending on your budget:

  • Personal care: Assistance with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and grooming.
  • Domestic assistance: Help with household tasks like cleaning, cooking, and laundry.
  • Medical and clinical care: Management of medications, wound care, nursing, and allied health services such as physiotherapy and exercise physiology.
  • Social support: Encouraging social interaction to connect you with likeminded people and enhance mental wellbeing.

Navigating complex needs

For seniors with challenging or complex needs, in-home care provides specialised support tailored to each client’s unique situation.

Complex care involves a higher level of expertise and often includes extra services for people with dementia care and high-level support for chronic conditions. Ensuring that these needs are met requires a collaborative approach between you, your family, the service provider, and healthcare professionals.

Choosing the right service provider

Selecting the right provider is vital to ensure you receive the personalised and compassionate care you deserve.
