Gran Slam is taking the art world by storm – the performance poetry masterclass and filmmaking project aimed at seniors is proving that the wordsmiths of wisdom still have a lot to say. And they're not afraid to say it!
Gran Slam is a collaboration between Feros Care and performance producer Everybody NOW, an organisation that shares our commitment to smashing stereotypes and supporting communities to live bolder lives.

More than 20 seniors had the chance to be a part of the slam poetry revolution under the guidance of an expert poet and literary performer, David Stavanger. The project consisted of a series of poetry workshops that taught aspiring wordsmiths to give voice to their ideas and experiences. The project culminated in a performance that was captured on film and will be screened at a Feros Care bespoke event at Byron Writers Festival.

Our Gran Slammers are people with a declaration to make, a voice to be heard, an opinion to be penned – regardless of prior experience in poetry. The Gran Slam project gave them the skills and platform to express themselves through prose and performance, and access to a wealth of knowledge that made the final performance a riveting success.

David Stavanger is an award winning and widely published poet and writer who has directed and featured in major festivals, often under the alias of Ghostboy, including Queensland Poetry Festival, Brisbane Writers Festival, and Sydney Writers Festival, among many. He is also the co-editor of the first ever Australian & New Zealand spoken word anthology Solid Air (UQP, forthcoming 2019).

Meet the Gran Slammers

Sheron Young in front of Gran Slam banner

Sheron Young
Age 70+

Sheron’s sense of adventure hasn’t just taken her on treks in Spain (twice), it has also landed her here on the Gold Coast writing and performing with us! With poems that are deeply personal one moment and uplifting and humorous the next, Sheron is a wordsmith that will make you strap on your boots because you’re in for a ride.

Roger Matthews in front of Gran Slam banner

Roger Matthews
Age 81

Self-proclaimed as the only South African born Aussie bush poet, Roger Matthews has travelled the world and sailed the south seas but his favourite place to be is huddled beside a campfire with a glass of red, reciting some of his favourites… to anyone who’ll listen. A romantic at heart, he has his cellar stocked and his sights set on 90!

Robbie Wesley in front of Gran Slam banner

Robbie Wesley
Age 72

Robbie really has led an exciting and eclectic life, from teaching in Jakarta to market research, nursing and time spent in a forest Buddhist monastery. Shall we say more? We’ll let this keen writer and poet share her stories in her own unique way!
