It’s important to truly connect with our communities, and to do so in culturally intelligent and appropriate ways.

In Mackay, our team wanted to make sure that Aboriginal, Torres Strait and South Sea Islander community members with disability felt comfortable to access the NDIS.  By working together with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations, we developed our 'Kinship Model'.

Rather than expecting the community to come to Feros Care, these partnerships allowed Feros Care to come to the community. The team spent time listening, learning, and serving these communities to create understanding and trust.

The ‘Kinship Model’ now provides a quick, easy, and culturally intelligent way to support Aboriginal, Torres Strait and South Sea Islander peoples to gain access to the NDIS.  It also significantly increased referrals to the NDIS in the area.

Our teams nationally continue to work with their local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to create similar, localised pathways to ensure access and understanding.
