Jayde’s journey: From vision challenges to rising equestrian star
From the moment Jayde was born, her family knew she was extraordinary.
Diagnosed with coloboma and microphthalmia, congenital eye conditions that cause impairment, Jayde has faced vision challenges her entire life. But her story is not about limitations. It’s about possibilities.
With the right support and her own unstoppable determination, Jayde has gone from needing assistance with everyday tasks to competing at a state level in equestrian sports.
Finding strength in the saddle
Navigating the world with limited vision hasn’t always been easy for Jayde. Tasks that others take for granted, like moving around the house, participating in community activities, or learning new skills, required extra support. But when she discovered Riding for the Disabled (RDA), everything changed.
Horse riding quickly became more than just a fun activity; it was therapy, empowerment, and freedom all in one. The movement of the horse helped Jayde with her posture and balance, while the connection with the animals helped ease her anxiety and build self-confidence. With each ride, her skills, and her dreams, grew bigger.
A rising star in the equestrian arena
Jayde’s passion for riding soon turned into something more: competition. Using her NDIS funding, she was able to access the training and support needed to compete at a state level. Last year, she achieved an incredible 1st place in Dressage and 2nd in Working Trail at the State Championships, an achievement that speaks to her talent, dedication, and love for the sport.
“I am extremely proud and grateful for what I have achieved with the support from Riding for the Disabled and all their volunteers,” Jayde shares.
Her RDA coach, Jody Burrows says, “Jayde has a deep passion and love for horses. Participating in horse riding has enabled her to step into the competition world and become successful in a sport only a few ever excel in.”
Her success has not gone unnoticed. Sarina Performance and Equestrian Club and Horseland Mackay have sponsored her to attend both state and local competitions, allowing her to continue pushing her limits. Jayde now competes in Dressage, Cantering, Unassisted Para 2.1, and Working Trail. And she has her sights set even higher. This year, she hopes to qualify for the national team.
The Power of Support
Jayde says none of this would have been possible without the NDIS and the incredible team at Riding for the Disabled.
Through NDIS funding, Jayde has been able to attend regular lessons, access necessary support, and turn her passion into a pathway for independence and achievement.
Jayde’s mum Kim is also very thankful. “I am extremely proud and grateful, not only for Jayde’s dedication to the sport but also for the dedication of the team at Riding for the Disabled.”
Beyond the ribbons and trophies, horse riding has given Jayde something even more valuable. It has developed her confidence, independence, and a belief in her own abilities. It has helped her overcome anxiety, improve her posture, and step into a world where she is not defined by her disability, but by her strength and talent.
Coach Jody agrees, “Being able to participate in horse riding lessons has had a significant impact on Jayde’s confidence, and emotional and physical wellbeing.”
Looking Ahead
As Jayde continues her journey, there’s no doubt that she will keep inspiring those around her. Her story is proof that the right support, a strong community, and an unbreakable spirit can turn obstacles into incredible opportunities.
With her next goal being a spot on the national team, the future is bright, and Jayde is ready to ride straight into it.
