“Try Before You Ride” empowers confident train travel for people with disability

For many people with disability, public transport can feel daunting. That’s why Feros Care hosted its second annual Try Before You Ride event at Gawler Railway Station on 25 October 2024. Designed to alleviate anxiety and cultivate independence, this free, hands-on initiative offered a welcoming introduction to Adelaide’s train system, with overwhelmingly positive results.

Building confidence through hands-on learning

The event offered 30-minute sessions where participants practiced essential skills like buying tickets, reading timetables, and safely boarding and alighting trains. Attendees also explored Adelaide’s accessible train features, designed to ensure comfort and safety for all travellers, regardless of their mobility needs.

“Inclusivity in public transport is essential and Try Before You Ride provided the perfect environment for people to build confidence and independence,” said Cheryl Fazzalari, Feros Care’s Community Development Coordinator.

A collaborative and inclusive experience

Held in partnership with Keolis Downer, South Australian Public Transport Authority, and supported by Guide Dogs SA/NT, the event had a truly inclusive atmosphere. With Guide Dogs on hand, attendees learned how to confidently interact with assistance dogs, adding an extra layer of comfort for those navigating public transport for the first time.

Feedback from participants highlighted the event’s impact: many shared how it alleviated their travel anxiety and gave them the tools they needed to embrace train travel as part of their daily lives.
