You can still access STRC and your Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) services at the same time, as long as services complement each other without duplication. You can be approved for STRC and a Home Care Package (HCP) by the assessor at the same time, however the STRC program will need to be completed before commencing your HCP.
If you are a Commonwealth Home Support (CHSP) recipient: You can still access the Short-term Restorative Care Program (STRC) and your Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) services at the same time, providing they complement each other – but are not the same services.
If you are a Home Care Package recipient: You can be approved for STRC and a Home Care Package (HCP) by the assessor at the same time, however the STRC program will need to be completed before commencing your HCP

What is STRC (Short-term Restorative Care)?
STRC is part of the government funded My Aged Care programme, delivered by a team of health professionals to provide services to help you feel strong, healthy, and happy again.
Perhaps you’ve noticed a change in your energy and strength after being unwell, or you’re struggling with day-to-day activities that could be addressed with some rehabilitation focused support, or have an injury that requires further rehabilitation and support? STRC is designed to provide the tools to help you regain strength, confidence, and independence so that you can keep living life your way.
Multidisciplinary teams comprising of allied health professionals, general practitioners (GPs), community health workers, and other specialists deliver services offered through the STRC program. These services may include:
- Exercise sessions
- Home modifications (such as putting in grab rails or lever taps)
- Nursing
- Nutrition and meal planning advice
- Occupational therapy
- Physiotherapy
- Exercise physiology
- Podiatry
- Technologies to help with day-to-day activities
How can STRC help me?
Most seniors want to live independently in their homes for as long as possible. The Short-term Restorative Care program offers practical support and allied health treatments like physiotherapy and occupational therapy to help you stay in control of your wellbeing.
With a range of health and home care services, STRC can reduce the risk of older Australians requiring (re)hospitalisation, and may help prevent the need for long-term care.
Am I eligible for STRC?
To determine if you are able to receive government funded Short-term Restorative Care, you (or your loved one) will need to be assessed by My Aged Care.
The general eligibility criteria states that a person must be:
- At significant risk of losing their independence.
- Able to retain their independence through support offered by the STRC programme.
- Assessed and approved for short-term care by the aged care assessment team at My Aged Care.
An age limit is not imposed for the STRC programme and you will not be required to undergo an income assessment.
Who is not eligible?
You are not eligible for STRC if you:
- Are residing in (or temporarily on leave from) permanent residential aged care.
- Are receiving home care services from a Home Care Package.
- Have received transition care at any time within the last six months.
- Have been hospitalised in the previous three months before the date of assessment.
- Are receiving end-of-life care.
- Have already received STRC for eight weeks twice in the last 12 months.
What if I am receiving CHSP, NDIS, or DVA services?
You will be pleased to hear that you can still receive your usual Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP), NDIS, or DVA services while benefitting from the aged care services offered through the Short-Term Restorative Care program.
As mentioned above, Home Care Package (HCP) recipients are not eligible.
Do I have to pay for the STRC program?
You are not obliged to fund any part of the services offered in the program. However, if you would like to access additional support offered by your chosen provider based on your individual needs, you are free to make an extra contribution towards the cost.
How do I apply for STRC on the Gold Coast
To receive STRC support, you will need a referral and an evaluation by a member of the government’s My Aged Care assessment teams.
