More the Merrier – Give the gift of connection

Christmas usually brings up thoughts of family and friends joyfully celebrating, swapping presents, laughter and great food. But it will be a dreaded time for thousands of seniors alone this year.

For the one in four Australians that struggle with loneliness, Christmas is far from ‘the most wonderful time of the year’. In fact, whilst their neighbours are revelling in seasonal belonging, for many of our treasured seniors it’s the worst and most isolating time of the year – not a single visitor and no one to share greetings with at Christmas time.

You can create a joyful, connected Christmas because seniors deserve so much more.

Our goal

Through “More the Merrier”, we will make Christmas less lonely, and more connected for 500 seniors. Together with you we’ll give them a Christmas to remember through cards, calls, visits and hand delivered hampers.

Here’s how YOU come in.

Handwrite Christmas Cards

There’s something so special about a handwritten card to let someone know they matter. So, we want your help to send Christmas greeting cards to treasured seniors to show them we care.

It’s the personal touch, from one human being to another and the connection is magical.

Q

Tips on writing your card

  1. This is about the human touch – just an uplifting kind note of friendship to let the recipient know that someone is thinking of them at this time. We encourage you to make messages thoughtful and heartfelt.
  2. Avoid negative emotions like sadness or loneliness in your message – we want to cheer people up and avoid anyone feeling pitied
  3. We will assign your card to a senior when we receive it back and will insert their name on your behalf. Leave the top part blank (the part where you would normally write “Dear …”
  4. Introduce yourself – it’s important that you let people know who you are and that this is from you to them.
  5. You can share a joke or a poem (make sure it is appropriate!).
  6. Handwritten cards are the nicest but please write legibly and in large print.
  7. Avoid religion. Please don’t include anything religious in your letters, such as religious quotes, words like “God,” etc.
  8. Please don’t put a date on your card so that we can send them out any time over the holiday period.
  9. Get creative! If you want to get creative with pictures and drawings, go for it! No worries if you’re not artistic though- your words will be enough.
  10. If you would like to, provide a return address so that the recipient can write back to you – you might end up with a “Gran Pal” but again, this isn’t meant to be an obligation and of course, no guarantees.
Q

Frequently asked questions about More the Merrier

Can I send a letter instead?
Yes – letter or card your message will be well received. It is entirely up to you as long as it goes through the post as a standard letter

Can I write more than one card?
Sure, there’s no limit on how many you do.

Can I send a gift with my card?
That’s very kind, but unfortunately not. To avoid postal difficulties, gifts can’t be included, but you can include pictures, poems and photos.

Will I get a card back?
If you’d like to give the recipient the chance to write back to you, include your name and postal address. Please don’t be disappointed if you don’t receive a reply. This doesn’t mean your well wishes haven’t been appreciated and its your gesture that matters.
